Roots tour to Kunta Kinteh Island

Roots tour

Roots tour – full day

An early start from your hotel at around 8:00 am for a drive to the harbour in Banjul where we will board our vessel.

We will be covering a distance of 25km upriver, to the villages of Albreda, Juffureh and Fort James Island now called Kunta Kinteh Island.

During this tour, you will discover the history of the transatlantic slave trade, how it was carried out and what was involved in the trade. You will also have the opportunity to meet the 8th generation from the descendants of Kunta Kinteh as in the book and film ‘ROOTS’ by Alex Hailey.

After meeting Kunta Kinteh’s descendants we take a break and enjoy a lovely all-inclusive lunch. Once refreshed we take a tour around a museum dedicated to the remembrance of the slaves that were held on the island.

Once we have finished at the museum it is a short boat ride to get to Fort James on Kunta Kinteh Island. We will spend around an hour with the dedicated island guides before setting off on our return journey.

Dolphin sighting is a great possibility on this river cruise. and can expect to be back at your hotel around 5 to 6 pm.

Fabulous experience

Booked 2 tours, river Gambia and Roots tour in March.
Lamin our tour guide was both friendly and knowledgeable, keeping us hydrated all day with cold drinks.
The River Gambia tour was so relaxing even tried fishing for the first time. Lunch was provided with fresh fish and Gambian dishes it was delicious.

Roots tour

We booked with bushwhacker after meeting some people who recommended them. Everyone we met or spoke to was extremely friendly and helpful. We went on the roots tour with Lamin, who was an excellent guide. Had a great day and if we come back we’ll definitely book with them again. We had a great day and can highly recommend. Thank you!
