Fathala wildlife reserve safari
Fathala safari, once again an early start at around 6 to 6:30 am for a drive to the Banjul ferry terminal to catch the ferry to Barra on the north bank of The Gambia.
The ferry crossing will definitely be your first experience on the tour, but it will indeed be a memorable one too.
In Barra, we will board our waiting open-top Land Rover for a drive to the Gambia-Senegal border.
After the usual passport checks and stamping, the tour will proceed to our main destination, which is the Fathala Safari Park.
This is where we will be spotting some of the big species of animals that have become distinct in our region, like the Rhinos, Giraffes, Buffalo, Elands, and Zebras, just to mention a few.
Be aware that these animals are not kept in cages, but you will have enough time with us to go around in the park to spot them.
Lunch will be served in Barra, and the next ferry will bring us back to Banjul at around 5 to 6 pm.

Die Tiere so nah zu sehen, besonders die Zebras, Antilopen und Affen, sind ein echtes Abenteuer, das wir jedem Tierliebhaber nur ans Herz legen können. ​Makasutu: Der Wald ist wunderschön. Auf dem Aussichtsturm hatte man einen schönen Ausblick über die faszinierende Landschaft. Wir fanden die vielen verschiedenen, v.a. medizinischen Einsatzzwecke der Pflanzen sehr beeindruckend. ​Was Bushwhacker Tours für uns so einzigartig gemacht hat, ist die Herzlichkeit. His knowledge of the local area, customs, politics, animals and more was incredible. We did a 3 day trip along the river with Bushwhacker tours. Accomodation and food is local and not Western so worth knowing if that is important to you but the guides and company are top knotch. We were able to see the chimpanzies, visit community projects and even Hippos, stopping at multiple villages and historic spots along the way. We had such a great time we changed our plans for later in our trip to do another trip to Makasutu Forest. I couldn't recomend Bushwhacker Tours enough. Travelling upriver, we explored places such as Janjanbureh, Wassu, Kuntuar, Baboon Island, and many other fascinating locations along the way. Visiting the C4RC project was a real highlight, and the wildlife in the surrounding areas was simply incredible. We were fortunate to spot three hippos, over ten chimpanzees, an astonishing variety of birdlife, baboons, and the ever-impressive colobus monkeys. While every part of the trip was enjoyable, what really set it apart was Alieu’s calm manner, deep knowledge, and excellent organisation. We had an excellent day with Dembo, from Bushwacker Tours, in Gambia. We arrived in Banjul on a cruise ship and were met at the bottom of the gangway. Dembo drove us out to the Abuko Nature reserve and proceeded to be an excellent birdwatching guide. He was knowledgeable and patient. He was well prepared and was able to help us spot humour out different birds. We also visited Lamin Lodge, where we enjoyed a delicious meal, and the antics of the local green vervet monkeys. Este tour al principio pensaba que era "muy caro" pero la verdad que valio la pena nuestro guia fue genial! sabe demasiado sombre Gambia la verdad que estuve muy contenta y sorprendida de la calidad del tour. La comida, el transporte, los servicios de poder conocer la cultura y hablar con gente local que te explique sobre gambia el etc. fue genial. El hotel donde nos hospedamos para ir en la busqueda de hipopotamos y chimpanses estuvo genial super luxus con aire acondicionada increible y la comida estaba espectacular. Encontramos hipopotamos muchos chimpanses muchas difentes especies de aves y pajaros hermosos y tambien cocodrilos. hicimos un hike en la manana que estuvo genial donde vivos muchos monos y tambien diferente tipos de plantas. la gente es muy amable y servicial yo estaba viajando con otras 2 chicas y enserio recomiendo este tour para que conoscas lo basico de gambia y veas un poco de la vida salvaje vale la pena.Posted onVerified Get the most out of a 2 day trip in Gambia! We were travelling with friends and wanted to experience the wildlife of the river Gambia. Especially to see the Hippos. The decision for this tour was because of the combination of wildlife, culture and history. This trip will give you the best insight in The Gambia in two days. The most important is of course the work from Ali, who was organising the trip for us. He was really fast in replying, explaining the itinerary and answering all questions. The most important for me is a reliable guide and that is for sure what you will get with Ali. We were picked up at our hotel and were driving in direction of Kuntaur, where we were sleeping. The day was full of impressions from the road side, marked, some nice surprises from the road and finally from the boat trip to see the wildlife. We were lucky and have seen two hippos, chimpanzees and birds. A lot of them! The food was really good both days and also the overnight stay was really nice and comfortable. The next day we started with a small walk and were lucky to see a lot of baboons and beautiful nature. After the breakfast we continued to the Wassu stones (Unesco Heritage) and Janjabureh or with the other name George town, where we visited some museums before heading back to Senegambia direction. We were a small group which was perfect. We were three friends, and it basically turned out to be a private tour that was really adapted to our wishes. We visited hippos, chimpanzees, and many other animals, but what made it even better was that it wasn’t only about wildlife — we also got to experience local culture. We visited a UNESCO-protected site, explored a local market, and saw a lot of nature along the way. Our guide Alio was fantastic — super knowledgeable, friendly, and always helpful. He explained so many things about the animals, the environment, and the local culture. The whole trip was very well organized, and in just two days we managed to see and experience so much more than we ever could have done on our own in a week. I felt very well taken care of; I was travelling solo and in total there were 3 guides at peak on top of 2 drivers. During the entire trip I saw that the team prioritized safety and comfort. Alieu, the manager, was very communicative before the trip and provided excellent guidance during the entire trip. I was glad I could freely talk with the guides and learn a lot about the Gambia beyond of the regular trip program. The prices are also good - 100 euro for one person, 140 euro for two people.
