South Senegal, The Casamance

Pelican island south senegal

The Casamance, Pelicans, Smugglers and a Marijuana plantation

Today we visit the Casamance.

An early start from your hotel or coastal accommodation and drive to Giboroh then to Seleti.

These are the two border villages between The Gambia and South Senegal for the usual border crossing procedures, which include passport checks etc.

We will then proceed to Kafountine, a major fishing village in the south of Senegal.

From there we will head for our boat trip at Kassel Village to Kailo Island along the river Casamance, and also where the famous Marijuana fields are.

This is an exceptional experience to see bird Island, a major sanctuary and breeding place for a lot of birds like Pelicans, Herons, Spoonbills, Storks etc.

We stop at Kailo Island to see the traditional life and culture of the people who still practise the traditional animist religion.

After which we will head to Abene for lunch and to see one of the biggest trees found in the Casamance region.

We will then head back to the Gambia via the ‘smuggler’s’ route. And are expected back at your hotel around about 6 pm.

Great to go local

Having read the great reviews here, on arrival in Gambia we spurned the Thomas Cook tours and walked into the office of Bushwackers on the Senegambia Strip. Instantly made welcome and arranged a Roots tour with our guide Zack. Prompt pick up from the hotel, (not Gambia Maybe Time…) and soon we were on our way up the river
