South Gambia eco-adventures – full day

We start our tour with a visit to ‘My Farm‘. An initiative set up to offer free education courses to local people.

It offers courses in soap making, permaculture training/gardening & a whole lot more.

Why not get your hands dirty and get involved in some vegetable growing and harvesting?

From here, we will travel south to another educational centre which teaches us the importance of reptiles and why the local community should preserve them and not kill them out of fear.

If you are not afraid, there is an opportunity to hold some of the less dangerous species.

At this halfway point in our day, we visit Footsteps, one of Gambia’s premier eco-lodges.

While waiting for our delicious buffet, we have a short tour from the founder, David, who shows us what sustainable technologies are being employed there.

After lunch and feeling refreshed, we have two more places of interest for you to experience.

First, this afternoon will be a trip to the Jalisut beekeeping centre, where we will not only learn the importance of our honey-making friends but also have an opportunity to purchase some handmade candles as a momentous occasion.

Lastly, we will be stopping at one of Gambia’s most beautiful beaches called ‘Paradise Beach’. Here we will spend an hour or so swimming, relaxing and generally unwinding before heading back to your hotels.

I did a two-tour to Janjanbureh, which was absolutely worth it. The tour by the locally owned Bushwacker tour provider was well organized, the vehicle was comfortable and all the stops on the way, especially on the Gambia river, provided me with great insights and memories.  Verified Great trip to Janjanbureh
Did a private tour to Janjanbureh with Alieu. Everything was well organized and went smoothly. The drive is long but it was always informative and the lunch breaks were yummy. Learned a lot about the country and its people. The boat trip is of course the highlight of the tour and I was really happy that we saw several hippos, chimpanzees, baboons…

Es war ein unvergessliches Abenteuer, mit so viel Herzlichkeit. In unseren Augen sind Alieu und sein Team, die beste Wahl für Gambia, was das ganze für uns persönlich, zu einer Traumreise gemacht hat! Wir haben mehrere Touren unternommen, die uns die Vielfalt der Region auf beeindruckende Weise gezeigt hat: ROOTS-Tour mit Kunta Kinteh Island: Diese hat uns sehr bewegt. Und war ein lehrreiches Erlebnis. Die Geschichte wurde uns mit so viel Respekt und Fachwissen vermittelt, dass uns dieser Tag nachhaltig beeindruckt hat. 3 Tage Casamance (Senegal): Das absolute Highlight unserer Reise! Die Organisation war erstklassig. Wir durften Regionen und Kulturen entdecken, die man als normaler Tourist kaum zu Gesicht bekommt. Eine unvergessliche Erfahrung abseits der Massen. Fathala Wildlife Reserve: Ein weiteres fantastisches Erlebnis! Die Safari direkt in der Nähe zur Grenze im Senegal war perfekt geplant. Die Tiere so nah zu sehen, besonders die Zebras, Antilopen und Affen, sind ein echtes Abenteuer, das wir jedem Tierliebhaber nur ans Herz legen können. Makasutu: Der Wald ist wunderschön. Auf dem Aussichtsturm hatte man einen schönen Ausblick über die faszinierende Landschaft. Wir fanden die vielen verschiedenen, v.a. medizinischen Einsatzzwecke der Pflanzen sehr beeindruckend. Was Bushwhacker Tours für uns so einzigartig gemacht hat, ist die Herzlichkeit. Wir haben uns zu keinem Zeitpunkt wie Fremde gefühlt, sondern eher wie gute Freunde, die gemeinsam mit einem Experten das Land erkunden. Ein riesiges Dankeschön an Alieu und das gesamte Team für diese unvergesslichen Momente!

 Verified Exceeded Expectations
Alieu was one of the best guides we have ever had and we are very well travelled. His knowledge of the local area, customs, politics, animals and more was incredible. We did a 3 day trip along the river with Bushwhacker tours. Accomodation and food is local and not Western so worth knowing if that is important to you but the guides and company are top knotch. We were able to see the chimpanzies, visit community projects and even Hippos, stopping at multiple villages and historic spots along the way. We had such a great time we changed our plans for later in our trip to do another trip to Makasutu Forest. I couldn't recomend Bushwhacker Tours enough. Thank you for making our first trip to Gambia so memorable. We will be back!

 Verified What a Journey
Our journey through The Gambia was made truly unforgettable thanks to our exceptional guide, Alieu. Travelling upriver, we explored places such as Janjanbureh, Wassu, Kuntuar, Baboon Island, and many other fascinating locations along the way. Visiting the C4RC project was a real highlight, and the wildlife in the surrounding areas was simply incredible. We were fortunate to spot three hippos, over ten chimpanzees, an astonishing variety of birdlife, baboons, and the ever-impressive colobus monkeys. While every part of the trip was enjoyable, what really set it apart was Alieu’s calm manner, deep knowledge, and excellent organisation. His well-planned itineraries made the experience seamless from start to finish. We would absolutely choose Bushwhacker Tours again on our next visit.  Verified Fantastic day trip from Banjul.
We had an excellent day with Dembo, from Bushwacker Tours, in Gambia. We arrived in Banjul on a cruise ship and were met at the bottom of the gangway. Dembo drove us out to the Abuko Nature reserve and proceeded to be an excellent birdwatching guide. He was knowledgeable and patient. He was well prepared and was able to help us spot humour out different birds. We also visited Lamin Lodge, where we enjoyed a delicious meal, and the antics of the local green vervet monkeys. Thank you Dembo and Bushwacker tours for making our day so enjoyable.

 Verified Great trip finding hippos in Gambia.
La visita a gambia fue Genial. Este tour al principio pensaba que era "muy caro" pero la verdad que valio la pena nuestro guia fue genial! sabe demasiado sombre Gambia la verdad que estuve muy contenta y sorprendida de la calidad del tour. La comida, el transporte, los servicios de poder conocer la cultura y hablar con gente local que te explique sobre gambia el etc. fue genial. El hotel donde nos hospedamos para ir en la busqueda de hipopotamos y chimpanses estuvo genial super luxus con aire acondicionada increible y la comida estaba espectacular. Encontramos hipopotamos muchos chimpanses muchas difentes especies de aves y pajaros hermosos y tambien cocodrilos. hicimos un hike en la manana que estuvo genial donde vivos muchos monos y tambien diferente tipos de plantas. la gente es muy amable y servicial yo estaba viajando con otras 2 chicas y enserio recomiendo este tour para que conoscas lo basico de gambia y veas un poco de la vida salvaje vale la pena.

 Verified Get the most out of a 2 day trip in Gambia!
We were travelling with friends and wanted to experience the wildlife of the river Gambia. Especially to see the Hippos. The decision for this tour was because of the combination of wildlife, culture and history. This trip will give you the best insight in The Gambia in two days. The most important is of course the work from Ali, who was organising the trip for us. He was really fast in replying, explaining the itinerary and answering all questions. The most important for me is a reliable guide and that is for sure what you will get with Ali. We were picked up at our hotel and were driving in direction of Kuntaur, where we were sleeping. The day was full of impressions from the road side, marked, some nice surprises from the road and finally from the boat trip to see the wildlife. We were lucky and have seen two hippos, chimpanzees and birds. A lot of them! The food was really good both days and also the overnight stay was really nice and comfortable. The next day we started with a small walk and were lucky to see a lot of baboons and beautiful nature. After the breakfast we continued to the Wassu stones (Unesco Heritage) and Janjabureh or with the other name George town, where we visited some museums before heading back to Senegambia direction. We were a small group which was perfect. Thank you very much for a really nice trip Alieu!
